Water Ballet

Well, let's hear it!

How was your experience in the pool? It was great fun to watch all the diving and synchronized swimming. You guys are really wonderful. I hope you had fun. What did you learn from the exercises? For those of you who have never been to the IMA, will you go again?

It was really fun to do ballet excercise in water.
While it was not as hard to do batman as i expected, chiken airplain and something was quite difficult actually. Water resistance reminded me of my inflexibility and weakness of my ankles.
Jumping and diving with passe pause was really tough. I wish I had more time and tried some more to improve my "passe diving". I think it would be so cool if i could jump and dive with a perfect passe pause or other ballet pause.

Water ballet was such a blast! So refreshing. First of all, it was great to have some relief on my ankle - the water let the movements be so much more gentle on my joints and my muscles. One thing that I noticed immediately was the effect of the lack of gravity. When doing a battement, rather than allowing my leg to just fall heavily and easily with gravity, I was forced to become aware of the space (water) that I had to push out of the way as I returned my leg back parallel to the other. I also became very aware of the need to engage my inner core (abs) to stabilize my movements and keep from floating away from the wall. This was also apparent during chicken, airplane, stick when I had to hold my body in line and my abdomine up toward the ceiling. Cool stuff. I really, really enjoyed it. Give me a ring if anyone wants to hit the pool again sometime (206) 419 1927

It was really fun to do ballet excercise in the pool, because i feel a lot of difference from dance in water compared with the studio. I feel when i dance ballet in the pool, somehow i did not have to used as much energy as in the studio. I think is because the water pressure holds me up so i save a lot of my energy compared with when i dance in studio. In studio, every single movement that i make, i have to used more energy, such as to lift the leg or do the kick leg position. I experence the difference between the studio and the pool.

Water ballet was fun. I love the IMA and go there often. I found the kicks way more challenging in the water. I think the resistence of the water provides a great workout, and I don't even sweat.

I agree with Megan that it was nice to have a break on our body parts. I really loved "passe diving." This class has been so much fun, because we do so many innovative things.

It was awesome! It definitely gave me an awareness of all of the muscles incorporated into different moves, rather than using some more than others as you said in class. I think the battements gave me the best realization of this. I though that the inner thigh work out in the middle of the pool was the most difficult - I couldn't do both the arms and legs at once or I would sink! It was a great time though, and also a great workout!

I actually had a lot of fun. I was really nervous before I got started but my nerves were calmed after watching others and realizing it really wasn't difficult. My favorite exercise we were asked to do was the "chicken-airplane-stick." It was so much fun. It was interesting because you told us that we would feel our opposite leg muscles working and I didn't really understand the severity of that statement. I really felt the different muscles working and that was really neat. I would definitely go again. I had a blast. Also, Erica and I were actually getting pretty good at synchronized swimming by the end of the hour.

It was just so nice to have a field trip! I hadn't used the pool at the IMA up to that point, and I think I will more often now. I certainly had a sense of what Louis was referring to in regards to the underside of the legs being neglected by our attention in class - the experience in the pool definitely brought attention to other muscles I have tended to forget about in class. Going up into devlope or batte ma (sorry, I should look up those spellings but am a little lazy at the moment...) was actually easier than coming back down into first position when in the water. I found that I started to float up from the wall at that point and really had to engage the core muscles. Lastly, passe and 5th arm position off of the diving board wasn't actually as hard as I thought it would be - though I was made fun of for my strained, worried facial expression!!! LOL!

i had a blast doing ballet in the pool. and the feeling of being in union all swimming together. i enjoyed the exercises in the middle with the floaty belts. and i'm glad my chicken airplane stick terminology stuck. ha. i found the side-to-the-pool battements to be the most challenging in keeping the "standing" leg firmly against that wall. I could feel my core really working. I liked water ballet so much that a group of us are making a weekly date of it. Anyone else interested is free to join us! It was a wonderful, feeing, exercise.

i find it is easier to do battement because the muscle is working with the water and not against gravity so it is not too tiring. i had difficulty doing the beats, just keeping me up from drowning. haha.
doing port ta bras is so much helpful, because you get to continue held your arms up(not too tiring) and really explore the movement of it.

love the synchronized swimming, especially when trevor suggested to have erica walked and pose and everything, hilarious! jumping from diving board is scary! my nerve got me ! but hey at least i jumped, although must have look funny!

may i suggest to have a whole quarter of water ballet ^_^

The pool experience was fun! It was a good experience to do ballet in the water. When doing the exercises in the pool, my arms started getting tired from holding myself up on the side of the pool but my legs felt really light except when it got closer to the surface of the water. I found myself using/noticing more of my muscles that I normally don't use on bar or in center during class. DOing the passe off the diving board was hard. It was hard to hold/ continue to the position in the air all the way to the water.I found myself flutering off the board in some weird position before hitting the water. Altogether, it was really fun especially watching and being with other people in the pool!

Water Balet was a real engaging experience. I was happy to have an experiential approach to learning ballet. I noticed that I was able to access my cre muscles more in the pool to stabalize my supporting leg and to keep my body upright. I also noticed and felt my lats work in the port de bras the water added the extra resistance that allowed me to feel the "breath" of using my arms and how I can make the transtion from each position flow and full of energy.
Also I noticed that my left hip was agravated after teh exercises I notice my left hip will act up in class to I applied my hand to my waist to maintain a correct hip placement however I still felt the tightness. I want to further explore the inniator of this sensation and would appreciate your feedback if there is something specific I may be doing that is contributing or creating the tightness in my left hip.
Despite the tightness I felt freedom and lightness in the middle of the pool and got quite a workout beating my feet and working through port da bras I liked these exercises they were challenging and required me to recruit my core muscles to stabilie and to find specific sensorial expereinces of how I use or have been using my body in ballet movements and how I can apply this explorations to become more cogniscent of how t progress and truly embody ballet technique.

I had a lot of fun doing ballet in the pool! It was tough trying to keep my stationary leg attached to the side of the pool while I was doing battements, but once I focused on that I got the hang of it. Doing the leg beats in the middle of the pool was quite tiring, even with the floaty belt on. I enjoyed experimenting with my arms in the pool. They felt so free and light, and I think my arm motions in the pool are much more graceful than my arm motions in the studio. At first I thought that jumping of the diving board in passe would be easy, but it was probably the most difficult thing I did at the pool! Something about the gravity when you jump off the board and try to lift one leg while keeping the other one straight was very tough. Every time I jumped off the diving board I went into the water at really weird angles. Overall, I had a really great time. I think that every dance class should go to the IMA at least once and experiment in the pool. I definately think it is something I would do again!

I did not participate in the water ballet, but I did get to observe. I saw that the moves seemed to be much more controlled in the water, with use of all the muscles the movements were intended for. I could imagine working on ballet in water would help build up strength for on land and that it might help you work on your technique to keep things from getting jerky. I've heard in general that water aerobics is very good for the body and helps build strength and reduce risk of injury, so I hope to be able to take a water aerobics class in the future.

Water ballet was fun! I was surprised by how much I could relate to what Louis had told us in class beforehand about being able to feel other muscles working, such as our hamstrings (?) on the under-sides of our legs while doing developpes. I think this will help me a lot when doing developpes out of the water. It also really helped me engage in how I was moving my arms while doing port de bras - I could really work on feeling the extension through my arms, all the way to my fingertips. I think doing water ballet could really improve my dancing overall, and would like to do it again sometime. I hadn't ever been to the IMA before and thought it was pretty neat - I checked out the studios there and, Louis you were right, they are gorgeous!

Water Ballet was AWESOME! However, the exercises were so much harder! I felt like my legs had weights attached to them. But this resistance was great!.. it felt like I was actually doing something, correctly. =) I loved it!

I was sore for a few hours, by the way. =P

Water was sooo fun! As I said before I think there should be a water ballet class :P:P I love playing in the water, so i usually go on Tues and Thurs for fun with friends... Now I have more interesting excersises to try out!!! wow! That was soo fun! So funny to see people get the courage to go off the diving board. It was scary for me but i figured it wasn't very far and so I just dropped off into a Sou Sou haha then it was soo fun! I had to go again and try passe a few times hahaha. omgosh and I tried the sauna I have never done that before but that's off topic! It was nice to feel different parts of my legs working in the water. In the center I got a great thigh work out trying to do beats in the water! It was so fun thank you!

Although something came up on Friday, I did make it to the pool on saturday to do the water ballet. i really enjoyed the different feeling. i noticed dmy core muscles working really hard to keep me stable in the middle of the pool. it was also nice to take the pressure off of the knees. the one thing that really was challengeing was the battemens. i had to work really hard to stay stable and work against gravity to get my leg up.

Louis, I really appreciate you trying to push us in so many ways. I feel like there is this whole other movement landscape I have never explored. And it's mine for the taking! This was a great idea and I had a great time! I haven't been in a pool for AGES! I think the most important lesson for me came from the slow motion. You tell us about keeping an energy present always. I felt that in the pool. THere was always a potential, each instant had me engaged.

Water ballet was really amazing. I really felt a connection to different muscles and also realized what I can do outside the pool to make my moves more fluid and also less stiff. I think my favorite exersize was beating my legs in the middle of the pool. It was really cool to feel your inner thighs working so hard to push the water out of the way and it made me think how hard your legs have to work to do beats during jumps. Having to hold yourself up at the side of the pool and engaging the back muscles really was interesting as well it was a different perspective of how to hold your arms without getting stiff or locking your arms in place.

This was an outrageously fun morning! I feel like our class just has so much fun learning, growing, and goofing off together! I haven't been swimming since last summer, so taking that first dive was slightly terrifying. But, once you take that jump, you just can't get out of the water!

It was really fun to have the freedom to work on excersizes at our own pace, and I really got to focus on some of those "other" muscle groups with standard battements, etc.

I think something to be learned from water ballet is the constant flowing of energy and movement through space which was much more evident physically when doing ballet in the water. The idea of spheres could be felt easily in the water, with the movement and waves.

Water ballet was quite an experience! It was so interesting to see the difference of gravity on the body and how that correlated to the particular ballet exercises we performed. Overall, I had so much fun despite the fact that my legs were super tired the rest of the day!

Water ballet was really great. I really enjoyed feeling my hamstrings work more than my quads for a while. It was helpful to experience that feeling so I can try and recreate it while dancing on land. Pushing against the water, whether it was battements or the arm movements were very controlled movements. The necessary core strength was needed even more to stay stable in the water. This too was a good feeling to experience as we all need to improve on core strength and using it to hold ourselves up. I love going to the IMA and will surely be there in the near future but it was fun to spend more time in the pool. Thanks for coming up with all that, it was a great day of class

Water Ballet was fun!!! I have to admit that I wasn't looking forward to getting into the water. But once I started, it turned out to actually be fun! I had to think more about the exercises. If I did it too fast, I would lose my balance. This gave me a chance to really concentrate on the exercises. I wish we could have done this a few times earlier in the quarter as well. It made me more aware of my movements.

I'll have to agree with everyone else that eater ballet was SO MUCH FUN. I think that you'll have a hard time finding anyone who didn't enjoy our little outing. I thought that it was neat to realize what our movements do to the space. It's not something that I usually pay too much attention to, but when there's something physically in the space that you actually have to push out of the way in order to be able to move it brings about a whole new awareness. The exercise in the middle of the pool actually made my inner thighs tired, which I thought was really cool, along with being more conscious about the pathway and movement of the arms.
Also, today in class when Louis made that correction about deciding to bring the leg down and not just letting it fall during battements, I was really able to draw the connection because of our pool exercises. I would definitely be up for doing this again.

Water ballet was way funner then i thought it would be. Honestly i did not want to do it but im glad we did. Some things where easier while others were way harder. Just doing a kick felt easier to me but i did feel that i was working muscles that i did not normally work. I was greatly surprised of how hard the extra credit off of the diving board was. i thought it would be a piece of cake but I could feel that I did not have the right form and did not push up like we do when we hold our balance in passe. The one thing that stood out the most was the use of your core. Without it i would have drowned. During the exercise where you do chicken, plane, stick i felt like it was a complete ab workout. If you stopped feeling your core you sank just like if you don't use your core in ballet you sink, aka can't keep balance. Overall it was a fun new experience.

It was a great change of pace to be able to practice sequences we have learned on the bar in class and apply them to moving in water. The first thing I noticed was the effect of moving your legs through the water in Battement and how fluid the motion becomes once prohibited by the water to move quickly. I think that it helps make your movements more graceful and using the muscles underneath your leg to extend in lift, rather than just pulling your leg up by any means necessary. I think that by having Louis mention lengthening your muscles and not relying just on a certain section really became apparent while performing the exercises in the pool.

Raevynn said...

I liked doing ballet in the water. I love swimming because I feel so much more flexible in the water. I naturally engage my center more when I'm in the water. It reinforced a lot of what we practice at the bar and in the water you really notice that your center has to work or you can't move the way you're supposed to. I found passe diving difficult; I've never liked diving so it wasn't the best part of the exercise. Overall, I really liked it.

The pool experience was revealing. Finding devellope (especially a la seconde) was very useful. It is another way to perceive the position, in addition to lying on the floor, and the regular standing position. I should, at least at some point in the (hopefully near) future, be able to add the water sensation into the standing position. The battu and port de bras exercises have been immediately helpful. Though, too many of those exercises too soon could lead to injury, I think.

The pool was fun and relaxing; just what I needed on the penultimate Friday.

Trevorrr said...

I agree with most of what was said. I liked the playful atmosphere and how the weightlessness of the water was easier on my knees and ankles. I also agree with Thomas that finding develope in the pool was akin to doing it while lying on the floor. Both exercises were very revealing.
I also learned that it isn't wise for me to attempt a tour jeté off the diving board...don't ask me how, but I ended up doing a back flop.

Water ballet was fun. It is neat to see how doing the same things in different conditions and positions feels totally different.
