Water Ballet Exercises

1) Side to the pool edge: Hooking one arm on the edge of the pool. Use a blue float board under your arm for cushion. Stabilize with the outside arm by pushing on the edge of the pool with the flat of the hand. Stabilize the inside leg on the edge of the pool using your core muscles.

Keeping the top of the foot of the inside leg touching the wall. Explore slow motion battements, and developé to the front, to the diagonal, to the back.

Feel the underside of the leg as it moves through the water. Feel the muscles necessary to engage the downward push of the leg.

Do: Battement front, passé, developé back, close first. Reverse. Repeat 10 times. (5 minutes)

2) Back to the pool edge: Hooking the arms on the edge of the pool, battement front and diagonal side. Again, keep the supporting leg grounded to the side of the pool. (5 minutes)

Do: Battements, 8 front, 8 diagonal side, right and left. Developé side, 8 each side. Enveloppé: battement out, passé, close.

3) In the center of the pool, (with a float belt if necessary): play with port de bras. From 1st to 2nd back and forth many times. Feel the different muscles necessary to bring the arms in and out. Feel the smooth quality of the movement of the arms. Feel how pushing through the water creates a controlled, fluid feeling in the arms. Remember this feeling and bring it into your classwork. (5 minutes)

Beats: Floating in the center of the pool, beat the legs back and forth in 5th position. Feel how the inner thighs work against the water to close the legs.

4) Traveling on your back: (feel free to use the lanes) Position one: arms in 5th en bas, legs both in passé. Position two: arms to second , both legs extend out to side. Position three: arms push down to feet, legs push to sou sou. (5 minutes)

Extra credit #1

Jump off the diving board in passé, or sou sou. Arms in 5th en haute.

Extra, Extra, Extra credit #2

Recreate the video below.

awesome. absolutely amazing. i think we should do it. synchronized swimming blows my mind. it's so difficult! keeping a leg perpendicular to the body while staying afloat with only your arms is a challenge, so say the least. neato.

If we busted out with this, I think the life guard would be too stunned to stop us! Shall I recommend Louis come out in some sort of beautiful garb that he slowly hands off pieces of to the rest of us, as did the main character??? Either him or Trevor is my vote!

SO I'll probably just go for extra credit #2.. #1 seems a bit too difficult... hahaha.

eeec #2 does not seem so hard. I mean it really just involves a sequined one-piece and some flaming fountains.

The water exercises are do-able, the extra-credit #1 is also manageable but extra credit #2...um..I 'm not sure so how or if we can make all that happen. It'll be really funny to attempt it though just to see how the lifeguard and people swimming laps would react.

I actually already have a swimming pool with flames and fountains back home, so I've already done the ex. credit! Haha, just kidding :)

I loved how this water ballet was such a performance. Seeing her facial expressions and smiles while swimming was really cool! I also caught myself holding my breathe half times, especially when they were swimming connected circles under water! Crazy!

I'm excited for Friday!

I can't wait for Friday. My sister, brother, and I love to make up sychronized swimming routines when we are in Mexico. We are all natural show-offs and the people around the pool get a free comedy show. Extra credit 1 for sure. Extra credit 2 is going to take some practice.

Are u going to demonstrate extra credit first?!?!?!?!?!

I will personally volunteer to be one of the women outside of the pool moving their arms in a graceful fashion, while we attempt to re-create this amazing water ballet.

I'm really excited to go tomorrow!!

I cannot wait to see how differently it feels to have no gravity enacting upon me while performing ballet exercises!

I agree with Samantha, #2 seems way easier than number 1! It would be funny to see everyone's reaction if the whole class did extra credit #2!

Omgosh!! THat was soo fun!! Water ballet should be a quarter long dance class hahahaha! I just love the water and how freely i can move. The water makes you move all the time to stay about the surface! Trying so many fun things in the water was a challenge, but just a blast to take a chance by jumping off the diving board when it looks so scary then you do it and it's so fun you want to go back and do it over and over!! Then trying the excersises and finding other ones like it or ways to make it harder!! It was a fun time!

Water ballet would be an awesome class! I wish we could have something like that with the school.

Water ballet was great! That was a great way to use what we have been learning and improving on in class in a whole new way. Attempting to turn that gracefullenss into synchronized swimming however, we need some work on! haha but it was definitely fun trying. Thanks for coming up with stuff like this for us to do that was really fun and a unique but very helpful way to spend class.

OK...louis...you need to organize some kind of water ballet class. It could even be a night class @ the IMA. If you want I could circulate a petition demanding it. Imagine what a guy like you could create with a pool, twenty students, and about 2 1/2 months of practices...just think of the possibilities. I'm just throwing it out there as something to consider.

I think extra credit #2 that some of the movement that i can not do because it's too difficult. The movement i have dance all the way in the water, i think it's kind hard. I only can do some of the movement in the extra #2. I will do extra credit #1.hahha. I enjoy watching the video how they do ballet dance in the water.

Doing ballet in the pool was neat. All the movements felt easier on my joints and muscles.. it's a different kind of sensation.
the only thing that would have made it better was a flaming fountain.

I second Trevor's comment.

A quarter-long water ballet class would be pretty incredible... and it sounds like there are already more than enough people interested in taking it :)

Water Ballet I thought was incredible! It was a refreshingly different change of pace and watching the synchronzied swimming is mesmerizing! Hitting every sequence perfectly with staying balanced under and above the water is impressive. I thought it was great to have the opportunity to practice what we have learned at the bar during class and feeling how water affects our leg position and movement! Great Idea Louis! However, the lifeguard looked confused by us all!

synchronized swimming and ballet are close cousins!
