Rock n' Roll Ballet

If you search for rock 'n roll ballet on you tube, this is what you get. Not quite our rendition but it's fun! The music is painful, and the kids are cute.

Speaking of fun, today was totally fun.

For homework, look up penche, pique arabesque, tour jete and promenade on the ballet dictionary here: http://www.abt.org/education/dictionary/

Please post your comments about this weeks class, rock 'n roll, or whatever you learned from the on line videos. Have a great weekend!

I think this is the video. A Rock 'n' Roll dance competition. I like the sound of that.

I enjoyed this week's class. It was something of a challenge to dance ballet to recorded music. I am so used to percussion or piano accompaniment. From a more technical perspective, I have discovered more balance in my pirouettes, except for that one when I fell. Also, my penché leaves much to be desired.

I very much enjoyed this week class.. its cool, i learn to just "let go" and have fun with it. I can even sing while dancing! haha!
i learn so many new moves this week like penche and its difficult to keep balance! i guess i need to practice more. and also my pique arabesque needs more umph to it..

i loook forward to next week

I really enjoyed class on Friday. When we dance to music that I know and can sing along to it just makes ballet that much more fun for me. Ballet is all about expressing yourself, and I found it very easy to express myself through the music we used on Friday.
The two kids on the video or SO CUTE! I will say that their routine looked really tiring, so I am kind of glad we do our rock'n'roll ballet a little differently.

I LOVED rock ‘n roll ballet. I have grown up dancing to recorded music so it is a very comfortable feeling for me. I feel I can count better with recorded music, which allows me to utilize my time better. For example, the opening stretch was way more beneficial for me with recorded music because I was more comfortable counting which let me know exactly how long I had to use up. Also, I like music with lyrics because then I can put certain moves with words (which may be a bad habit, but it seems to have worked for me so far). Anyway, I loved this week’s class and I hope we get to do it more often.

I loved rock 'n roll ballet! It was a lot of fun putting music we knew to dance moves and I loved seeing everyone let go with "Unwritten" - it was a total release! The video is really cute too, but I wish I could make them smile because it would make it look 10 times better to me. :)

Louis said...

That's true Samantha, they aren't smiling. What do you think their emotional state is? Are they having fun or is it work? Is it creative?

Rock 'n roll ballet was great. I hope we get to do more of that as the quarter progresses. Although I really do like dancing to traditional piano accompaniment, the recorded misic really did allow me to have more fun. The new moves that we added on friday were challening but very fun. Its all coming back to me as the weeks go on and I love realizing that I can still do it. The ponches were great ways to work on balance and the importance of core work. I hope there is a lot more to come in those areas!

I also noticed in the video that the kids were not smiling even though the music was so happy...i feel that ballet has such a serious connotation to it that people who are trained in ballet stick with that even though the music is so happy and not like normal ballet. I think its super cool to do ballet to different types of music that you don't normally see ballet done to. I have seen ballet dances done to hip hop music and it just looks sooo cool! I think stuff out of the ordinary draws attention to it, so even though the moves the kids were doing in the video weren't that technical it still brought attention because it was out of the norm of traditional ballet.

I really like how many people have noticed that the kids in this video didn't seem happy or very into the feeling of the dance, I felt like they were just memorizing steps, and from doing dance for a while, my guess is that they might have one of those critical stage moms that I was very blessed NOT to have...

On the topic of ballet and whether you enjoy it, I noticed a lot more people enjoying the class at a new level on Friday, including myself, and it was delightful to catch people singing or lip-synching along to the music - I think that a lot of people danced with a intent because it was that much more exciting....

Also - the post class jam session was outrageously fun! Booty shakin' is some of the most fun a dancer can have!

Personally, i loved last weeks class. Rock N Roll Ballet was really entertaining and fun. It seemed like it was easier to get into the moves because i liked the music. Also, the music was easier to count.

The online ballet dictionary is really helpful. I like how it not only tells you what the term means, but also how to do it.

Can't wait for wednesday! :)

I friggin loved Rock n' Roll Ballet - it was such a blast. I would LOVE it if every friday was Rock n' Roll friday. One reason I really loved it is because dancing to contemporary music that I hear on a regular basis allows me to bring ballet outside of class on a regular basis. I'm out in the clubs - and the speakers are bumping "My humps..my hump...my humps" and I'm like hmmm you know what would go really well with this? Tombe pas de burre, glissade saut du chat...

I am really enjoying rock'n'roll ballet! It is a really different experience for me than dancing to percussion or piano accompaniment, and I really like that we are switching things up and trying out different ways of dancing ballet. I also agree with Erica in that I feel like I'm learning to just "let go" and have fun with it, which is something that I wasn't expecting out of a ballet class. Also, I still feel like intermixing choreographed combinations or steps with improv is challenging me in some new ways, which I really like and feel like I'm getting a lot out of.

It definitely looks like work - especially because they don't even smile when they're finished and when he waves goodbye to the audience, he doesn't even look. I think they should attend one of your classes and you could help them out with the creativity/enjoyment aspect of dancing. :)

On a different note.. could you post the songs you're doing for rock n' roll ballet because some of them are so darn catchy! thanks!

The past two classes have been amazing! I love the ipod music selection. Since I started out in a studio that could not afford live music this was how I learned to dance and it brings back fond memories. Just like our improve "rock out" sessions, I think the contemporary music helps me develop my own personality to my dance technique and also keeps me distracted so I don't get so caught up in getting the combination right, but also feeling each movement and how my body reacts.

Rock n roll ballet was a lot of fun yesterday! Yeah, it was a little confusing with timing sometimes, but at other times it seemed easier as well. I really enjoyed it because whenever I listen to my ipod I always choreograph dances in my mind to the music. One of the songs we warmed up to was actually one of them- "teardrop", so that was a nice suprise!

This week's class was fun. Rock 'n' roll ballet is very different from the usual traditional or piano music we usually dance to. It's nice sometimes to dance to recorded music because the tempo and beats are so different and often times it changes during the song.

The two kids in the video are really cute and quite good for their age. I didn't see too much of an expression in their face but that may just be because they are more focused on getting the right moves in at the right time.I think they are still having fun though. I also find it hard myself to smile or be facially expressive when I am in class doing the combination. I tend to smile and focus more on expression when I am in a performance but that's because I have to :)

I really enjoyed the rock n roll ballet! It was a nice change from having the piano to accompany us everyday. I also felt like I could let loose more because I knew the music and it was just simply fun!

I LOVE Rock 'n Roll ballet! The counts aren't as obvious as the piano or percussion but it's something different.. and different is ALWAYS good!

Can we get the names of the songs..?

Haha, well put, Megan! Yes, I think that the best part about Rock 'n' Roll ballet is that it gives you more ways of thinking about ballet, more contexts to put it it. It makes ballet more accessible and personal when it's not limited to certain moods or the classroom setting. Ballet is wonderful and we should be able to get to it whenever, wherever and not feel like it's incorrect.

i have never had this much fun in a dance class, i leave full of energy and in a great mood. i have had friends in other classes come to me and ask what we are doing, and i reply, "rocking out"

I also enjoyed this weeks class. It's nice to break away from the traditional ballet music, and I think it's easier to connect with the music.
Also, the other ballet classes were confused (and probably jealous) of our rocking music

I really liked this week's class. It was really fun to move to different music and still do ballet, but also dance however I want to. It was nice to have the moments of improv or just silly movement because sometimes I was concentrating so hard on just getting everything down perfectly, I forgot it was supposed to be fun.

Last Friday's class was really amazing. Dancing ballet to more contemporary music has always been one of my favorite things. I think that it really helps me to put ballet in a more... natural(?) perspective. It's not just this old stuffy dancing stuff that was invented hundreds of years ago. I feel like I relate more to it better and that I can put more emotion into my movement.

The center work for rock and roll ballet has also been awesome. It has incorporated all sorts of difficult things. The challenge is fun, and it's so exciting for me when something that I know that I have difficulty with ends up working out.

Last week's classes were fun. I enjoyed trying ballet to different types of music. I feel I did okay with my penché (new vocabulary for me), but I still need work on my pirouettes.

The kid rock n' roll dancers are cute, even if they aren't smiling. Imagine how much more entertaining it would be if they looked happy and excited instead of just being in time with each other.

All I have to say is that I was sooooo touched by one moment in class on Friday. It was at the point that the entire class just rocked out for a few measures of eight in between other combinations - for me, I hadn't felt so free and child like in probably years. And I felt so much joy in seeing everyone else's joy - ok, I am getting sappy now. Who ever thought rock and roll ballet would do that????

I really enjoyed this week of class. It's challenge because we learned a lot of new movement. I still have to work on my body balance because i still have hard time to balance myself for long period of time in some of ballet position. I think practice will make it better.

Rock and roll ballet really rocked. The expereince reminded me of how powerful creativity is when applied to learning. Also the expereince was one of the first learning experiences I have had that has trully moved me and something I would nominate an award for. My thoughts were provoked by the unorthodox appraoch and my enthisiiasm was heigtened. I realized that enthusiasm of the instructor and of the dancer are fundamental in creating a growing expereince and how enthusiasm is often overlooked to just get things done and move on instead of realizing the moment is know and this expereince could be an enlightening and truly remarkable growing expereince. Rock and roll ballet acelerated my ability to take on multiple tasks and invest charceter and remined me to treat each class as one class and invest in that moment!

These kids are impressive with their high kicks. I can tell they are having fun.

I must say with rock n roll ballet, and access to you tube and the internet, it is so great to be able to access dance without having to become professionals in the field.
